Dear Culver City… is a multifaceted project that entailed leading over thirty ceramics workshops across Culver City with community members of all ages and backgrounds.  At the workshops, I taught ceramic hand building classes in which participants learned to make pinch pots and  small sculptures.  These pieces were then collected, fired and glazed, and became part of a large scale installation hung with aircraft cable at the entry gates to Culver City Hall.

I also had workshop participants jot down words on paper that came to mind when they thought about Culver City’s past, present and future.  Participants then chose one word to stamp in wet clay, which I fired and glazed.  All of the words that were written on paper were alphabetized and compiled into documents which were given to local poets who created unique poems inspired by the collected words.  The poets, Topacio Althaus, Brian Sonia-Wallace, Janet Cameron Hoult, Karen Gibson Roc, Leah Johnson and Kate Burns read their poems at the April 2024 exhibition opening.  Additionally, their poems were published in a book that was distributed at the opening event.  The book, entitled Dear Culver City... is available for loan at Culver City’s Julian Dixon Library.
